July 8, 2010 EXHIBITS CLOSING JULY 17 See Teacherworks and Tall in the Saddle before they are gone! At the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford WEATHERFORD, TX – Two exhibits at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford will be closing on July 17, and everyone is encouraged to see them before they are gone. One is “Teacherworks,” an exhibit of Parker County Art Teachers’ works including paintings, sketches, costumes and sculpture all created by local teachers. “We’ve invited all of the high school and junior college teachers from across Parker County to participate. They are an incredibly talented group and we are so glad to welcome them to the Doss Heritage and Culture Center this summer,” said C.B. Williams, exhibit coordinator. Many of the pieces are available for sale during the exhibit. “It’s a great opportunity to purchase a piece by a local artist,” said Williams. Also through July 17 is “Tall in the Saddle,” which celebrates the Parker County Sheriffs Posse’s proud history and its annual rodeo held each summer. Included in the exhibit is original artwork by Posse member Phil Livingston depicting each of the rodeo events along with photographs of cowboys competing in each one. Actual barrels used in barrel racing competition, an original gate from the Parker County Rodeo Arena, tack, saddles, a Posse uniform, flags, trophies, trophy buckles, vintage photographs and other memorabilia are on display. There is also a special area dedicated to the Posse Sweethearts and a case filled with vintage rodeo programs dating back to the 1940s. Visitors can also see a member’s timeline from the inception of the Posse in 1947. “It’s the coolest way to experience the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo,” said Doss Heritage and Culture Center Board Member Ann Saunders. During the summer months, the Doss Heritage and Culture Center is participating in the Blue Star Museums program that offers free admission to museums for all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010. For a full list of participating museums visit the website at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums. “We couldn’t be happier about being a part of the Blue Star program,” said Board President, James May. “Our military gives so much of themselves to keep us safe, we are glad to welcome them to our Texas History Museum as a thank you for all that they do.” The mission of the James and Dorothy Doss Heritage and Culture Center, a Texas History Museum, is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Parker County through cultural and educational events that raise community awareness and pride in our western heritage. For more information visit the website at www.dosscenter.org or call 817-599-6168. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens. The address is 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford, Texas.
