Description
Careity Foundation is a Texas 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with two initiatives. Careity is dedicated to providing on-site support services in an oncology setting and early breast cancer detection for economically challenged cancer patients in North Texas. The pediatric palliative care program is directed at providing relief to children with devastating diseases and life threatening illnesses at Cook Children’s in Fort Worth.
Cancer Program
The objective of Careity Foundation is to insure all cancer patients have accessibility to mammograms, nutritional supplements and counseling, pain management, psychotherapy, education, research, gas allowances and other expanded services regardless of their ability to pay.
Strong partnerships produce strong programs. Careity Foundation maintains a presence at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to make sure effective and necessary services are provided. The heart of our program lies in our use of specialized professionals to create substantial, personal relationships with patients as a basis for care.
Cancer patients without health insurance have poorer health outcomes after illness and have higher overall mortality rates. A nutritionist is brought in upon diagnosis to counsel the patients on a nutritional program. This is the best chance we have in preventing nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional supplements are provided to those who need them. Careity Foundation implemented oncology massage during chemo treatment over five years ago and now some major US teaching hospitals in the country have followed our lead. Acupuncture is offered as a compliment to other medications for pain. A psychotherapist is also available for these cancer patients. Our cancer navigator offers a guided imagery session and a CD along with an entry book to keep track of medications, doctors’ visits, etc. We also provide spiritual counseling for the patient throughout their treatment. Careity gas cards ease the travel expense of numerous appointments for the economically challenged.
Careity Foundation initiated a landmark event in 2009. Believed to be the first private initiative of its kind in the nation, Careity Day offered cost-free mammograms to economically-challenged women with a pledge of cost-free treatment – from biopsy through hospitalization, chemotherapy and radiation therapy – for any participant diagnosed with breast cancer.
Pediatric Palliative Care Program
With remarkable advances in medical technologies many small patients who face serious and complex medical problems are able to live longer, more active lives. Unfortunately, though, when a cure for one of these medically fragile children is not possible, the goal of physician and parents becomes enhancing the quality of life – and easing its end.
The palliative care program funded by Careity Foundation at Cook Children’s under the direction of Dr. Todd Pearson, helps these young patients and their families confront the difficult medical decisions that must be made during the complicated course of each one’s illness and at the end of each young life.
Care is initiated as soon as the incurable diagnosis is made, and provides support to the entire family through guidance, information, pain relief, and spiritual help until the end of the child’s life….no matter how long the life.
